Pistols that Competed for the 1907 Military Pistol Trials

In 1906 the U.S. Army sent out notice that it would be conducting tests to find the next service pistol. A number of arms manufacturers responded by submitting their pistols for consideration. The automatic pistols tested included the .45-caliber Luger, Colt, Savage, Bergmann, Knoble, and Merill-White. I found pictures of all the automatics except the Knoble which was reportedly rejected before testing even began.

I recently ran across this old Ordinance Department Army Field Manual for the Model 1918 BAR Browning Automatic Rifle (air cooled). Thought it might be helpful to someone so I scanned the diagram click for a larger image. For a full text version click here.


BROWNING AUTOMATIC RIFLE, CALIBER ,30, M1918A2

The Browning automatic rifle, caliber .30, M1918A2, with bipod, is an air-cooled, gas- operated, magazine-fed shoulder weapon, (See flg. 1.) It weighs approximately 21 pounds without sling. The am- munition is loaded in magazines of 20 rounds. The weight of the magazine when empty is 7 ounces; when filled, 1 pound 7 ounces. Fire Power. — The Browning automatic rifle, caliber .30, M1918A2, is not capable of semiautomatic fire. There are two cyclic rates of full automatic fire, normal and slow, which may be selected by the flrer. The normal cyclic rate is approximately 550 rounds per minute; the slow cyclic rate is approximately 350 rounds per minute. The effective rate of fire for this weapon is from 120 to 150 rounds per minute,

August Stukenbrok Einbeck was a German mail order company similar to our own Sears and Roebuck and was founded in 1888 in Einbeck,Germany and existed until 1932.

One I found at an online auction in more original condition.
